Automated Monitoring Of Fissile And Fertile Materials In Incinerator Residue

View page
US Patent:
46200991, Oct 28, 1986
Filed:
Aug 26, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/526582
Inventors:
Frederick C. Schoenig - Wilmington NC
Sharon G. Glendinning - Palo Alto CA
George W. Tunnell - Foster City CA
Martin S. Zucker - East Moriches NY
Assignee:
General Electric Company - San Jose CA
International Classification:
G01F 2300
US Classification:
2503581
Abstract:
A system for determining the radioactive materials content of the ash or residue from an incinerator of contaminated materials contained in cans. The system includes can handling apparatus, a neutron source for activating the material and neutron and gamma ray detectors for detecting emissions from the materials by which fissile/fertile material content is determined.

Voice Controlled Welding System

View page
US Patent:
46412921, Feb 3, 1987
Filed:
Oct 21, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/789732
Inventors:
George Tunnell - Foster City CA
Charles L. Pomernacki - Oakland CA
Jack P. Gregg - Fremont CA
International Classification:
G10K 1100
B23K 910
US Classification:
367198
Abstract:
Apparatus and method are provided for permitting human voice control of a welding system. A human operator, remote from a welding power supply, uses a welding torch connected by a power line to the welding power supply. The human operator is provided with an audio transmitter which permits the operator to adjust the welding power supply through verbal commands. The verbal commands are issued by the human operator, and are transmitted through a receiver, a voice recognition unit, and a computer, which is electrically connected to deliver power control signals to the welding power supply to thereby adjust the power delivered to the welding torch. The operator may also issue verbal commands to start and stop an internal combustion engine which drives the welding power supply, when such an engine is used. Additionally, when the welding process incorporates a consumable wire electrode, the operator may verbally alter the speed at which the wire electrode is fed through the welding torch. A major advantage of the system is that changes are made without interrupting the welding process.

Quality Assurance Apparatus For Dimensionally Inspecting Elongated Components

View page
US Patent:
50144391, May 14, 1991
Filed:
Feb 9, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/477372
Inventors:
Donald F. Butzin - Wilmington NC
George W. Tunnell - Foster City CA
Harold B. King - Wrightsville Beach NC
Frederick C. Schoenig - Wilmington NC
Assignee:
General Electric Company - San Jose CA
International Classification:
G01B 504
US Classification:
33533
Abstract:
To measure the dimensional characteristics of elongated flow channels for nuclear fuel rod assemblies at the manufacturing site, an upender is utilized to swing a flow channel from a horizontal loading orientation to an upright pre-measurement position and then to shift the flow channel laterally into a measurement position where it is engaged and held by reciprocatingly mounted upper and lower endplugs while its dimensional characteristics are acquired by a measurement carrige mounted for vertical scanning movement along the entire flow channel length.

Monitor For Airborne Radioactive Particles

View page
US Patent:
47016213, Oct 20, 1987
Filed:
Feb 10, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/827700
Inventors:
Bruce J. Kaiser - Cincinnati OH
Edward S. Walker - Westchester OH
George W. Tunnell - Foster City CA
William Masaitis - Castle Hayne NC
Assignee:
General Electric Company - San Jose CA
International Classification:
G01V 704
US Classification:
250435
Abstract:
A monitor for detecting airborne radioactive particulates is disclosed. An elongate strip of filter paper is fed across first and second air inlet ports of a collection chamber. Ambient air is selectively drawn into the chamber through a selected one of the inlet ports and out an through outlet port. Particulates trapped on an area of the filter paper in alignment with the open inlet port are detected after advancing the strip area into alignment with the closed inlet port. A radiation detector mounted on a movable arm is selectively positioned over the closed inlet port to detect the trapped radioactive particulates, while a new sample is collected at the open inlet port. Exposure of the detector surface to corrosive materials is avoided and the detector can be positioned close to the filter strip to maximize counting efficiency and energy resolution. A microprocessor controls the functions of the monitor and allows continuous unattended operation.

Device For Dimensionally Characterizing Elongate Components

US Patent:
51125668, May 12, 1992
Filed:
Apr 12, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/336999
Inventors:
Donald F. Butzin - Wilmington NC
Edward W. Meeka - Pleasanton CA
George W. Tunnell - Foster City CA
Edgar E. Salvo - Wilmington NC
Assignee:
General Electric Company - San Jose CA
International Classification:
G21C 1700
US Classification:
376245
Abstract:
Disclosed is a device for measuring dimensional characteristics of an elongate component which comprises: (a) an elongate rigid support that bears (i) an upper platform upon which is mounted a drive; (ii) a clamp mechanism for securing said component about its proximal end in a reference position; (iii) a lower platform which supports a pedestal for securing said component about its distal end in a reference position; and (b) a sensor carriage movably mounted to said rigid support and operatively connected to said drive for movement along the elongate extent of said support and having an opening penetrating therethrough for receiving said elongate component when it is secured by and substantially parallel to said rigid support, said carrier bearing a plurality of pivotally-mounted bell cranks spaced about said opening, each bell crank having a wheel for riding on said component during movement of the carrier and being in contact with a sensor capable of providing a signal correlative to displacement of the bell crank during movement of the carrier along the elongate component.

Multizone Automated Nuclear Fuel Rod Loading System

View page
US Patent:
49801198, Dec 25, 1990
Filed:
Apr 3, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/503079
Inventors:
Frederick C. Schoenig - Wilmington NC
David G. Tashjian - Wilmington NC
Archie C. Lamb - Wilmington NC
Barry S. Guilliams - Wilmington NC
George W. Tunnell - Foster City CA
Edward W. Meeka - Pleasanton CA

General Electric Company - San Jose CA
International Classification:
G21C 2100
US Classification:
376261
Abstract:
Pellet trays bearing rows of fuel pellets of known enrichment concentrations are retrieved from selected storage elevators and successively conveyed to a zone makeup machine. Parallel rows of pellets are raked from each tray and advanced over a longitudinally elongated, grooved loading surface into abutment with a selectively longitudinally positioned stop. A zone makeup carriage makes up the pellet rows to a prescribed, common zone length, which are then weighted and advanced in parallel by a vibratory loader into a plurality of cladding tubes arranged in parallel loading positions by tube handling apparatus. Overall operation is coordinated by a system controller to concurrently load the cladding tubes with multiple pellet zones of varying enrichments and lengths in automated fashion.
