Nonionic Surface Active Oligomers As Coating Aids For The Manufacture Of Photographic Products

View page
US Patent:
6472139, Oct 29, 2002
Filed:
Feb 2, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/776107
Inventors:
Alan R. Pitt - Sandridge, GB
Trevor J. Wear - South Harrow, GB
Elizabeth A. Simister - Harrow, GB
Alice G. Moon - Penfield NY
Assignee:
Eastman Kodak Company - Rochester NY
International Classification:
G03C 138
US Classification:
430635, 430619, 430631
Abstract:
A hydrophobically capped oligomeric acrylamide or pyrrolidone is employed as a coating aid in coating compositions, especially such compositions useful in the manufacture of photographic products. Preferred coating aids are surfactants having the general formula in which R, R and R are each independently selected from aliphatic hydrocarbyl, aryl-(aliphatic hydrocarbyl) and (aliphatic hydrocarbyl)-aryl groups, which groups may be unsubstituted, partially fluorinated or fully fluorinated, L is a sulphur atom or a linking group that contains a sulphur atom attached to the T group and T is a hydrophilic oligomeric group obtainable by the oligomerisation of one or more vinyl monomers having an amido function.

Coating Method With Improved Coating Uniformity By Choice Of Surfactant Composition

US Patent:
6703067, Mar 9, 2004
Filed:
Jun 24, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/178264
Inventors:
Alice G. Moon - Penfield NY
F. Miguel Joos - Pittsford NY
Alan R. Pitt - Sandridge, GB
Assignee:
Eastman Kodak Company - Rochester NY
International Classification:
B05D 500
US Classification:
427 8, 427402, 427420, 73 6143, 73 6448
Abstract:
A method for measuring the dynamic surface tension (DST) of a proposed outer layer of a liquid composition, to be curtain or slide hopper coated, over a range of surfactant levels to determine the surfactant concentration which produces the maximum resistance to air currents. Measurements are made by the Wilhelmy Blade Method, in which a surface of a pool of composition to be measured is placed in contact with the lower edge of a suspended blade. The static method is modified such that the surface of the composition touching the blade is continually refreshed to simulate the formation of fresh curtain surface by pumping the composition upwards through an open cylinder and allowing the composition to spill over the edges (âoverflowing weirâ). The bulk surfactant concentration providing maximum resistance to coated streakiness or mottle is highly correlated with the concentration providing maximum surface tension gradients in the overflowing weir apparatus. Thus, for new or non-optimized air-contact layers, the optimum surfactant concentration can be predicted quickly and inexpensively through off-line measurement of surface tension using the overflowing weir technique.
