Method And Apparatus Providing For Router Redundancy Of Non Internet Protocols Using The Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol

View page
US Patent:
6556547, Apr 29, 2003
Filed:
Dec 15, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/212129
Inventors:
Ayikudy Srikanth - Reading MA
Tom Meehan - New York NY
Hamayon Mujeeb - Chelmsford MA
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - St. Laurent
International Classification:
G01R 3108
US Classification:
370317, 370389, 370401, 370469
Abstract:
A router providing router redundancy and fail-over protection for Internet Protocol (IP) and at least one other network layer protocol. The router Includes means for determining if the router has Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) enabled, means for determining if the router is a master virtual router for IP traffic, means for configuring the router with a VRRP based Media Access Control (MAC) address that overrides a physical MAC address assigned to a port at which VRRP is enabled, and means for transmitting the VRRP based MAC address in a Routing Information Protocol (RIP) update packet.

Determining An End Point Of A Gre Tunnel

View page
US Patent:
6779051, Aug 17, 2004
Filed:
Jul 30, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/364339
Inventors:
Nipun Basil - Billerica MA
Ayikudy Srikanth - Reading MA
Tom Meehan - Billerica MA
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Corporation - Montreal
International Classification:
G06F 1300
US Classification:
710 33, 710 26, 370401, 709242, 709238
Abstract:
An end point address of a generic routing encapsulation (GRE) tunnel is obtained by forwarding a data packet through the GRE tunnel to devices at a multicast address. The data packet includes a logical address of a GRE tunnel end point device. A reply to the data packet is received from a remote GRE tunnel end point device. The reply includes a physical address of the remote GRE tunnel end point device.

System Using Different Tag Protocol Identifiers To Distinguish Between Multiple Virtual Local Area Networks

View page
US Patent:
6430621, Aug 6, 2002
Filed:
Dec 29, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/222045
Inventors:
Ayikudy K. Srikanth - Reading MA
Rahul A. Mehta - Woburn MA
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - St. Laurent
International Classification:
G06F 15173
US Classification:
709238, 709227, 709230, 709245
Abstract:
A method and apparatus that provides for grouping nodes in multiple VLANs using port based VLAN grouping, and explicitly associates one of multiple VLANs with a packet transmitted by the nodes, using IEEE 802. 1Q based frame tagging. A switch receives an untagged packet, filters the packet, and based on the contents of the packet, inserts a tag header with a common VLAN identifier and a unique tag protocol identifier (TPID).
