Method And System For Golf Cart Control

View page
US Patent:
7239965, Jul 3, 2007
Filed:
Jan 9, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/754916
Inventors:
David J. Wehrlen - Austin TX, US
David J. Mullinix - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
Uplink Corporation - Austin TX
International Classification:
G01C 21/00
US Classification:
701213, 701208
Abstract:
Golf cart movements at a golf course are controlled by a limited access controller that compares a golf cart's GPS-determined position against a limited access map to restrict performance of inputs by the golf cart's driver to the golf cart's motor under predetermined conditions, such as if a golf cart enters or has a predetermined likelihood of entering a limited access area. The limited access controller inhibits motor responses, such as by preventing motor operation, limiting available motor speeds, or allowing motor operation only in a vector that removes the golf cart from the limited access area, such as operation in reverse. Golf carts of a golf course communicate with a base station that updates the limited access map by defining limited access area perimeters and allowable actions within a limited access area and that directly commands allowable motor operations. For example, golf carts are prohibited from entering green areas, are restricted to golf cart paths during cart-path-only periods, and are restricted to reduced speeds in driving hazard areas.

Electrical Control System

View page
US Patent:
20130307450, Nov 21, 2013
Filed:
May 15, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/895336
Inventors:
Robert Lyle Fuller - Conifer CO, US
David J. Wehrlen - Evergreen CO, US
International Classification:
H02P 6/10
US Classification:
3184003
Abstract:
An electrical control system having a direct current to direct current regulator receiving a direct current supply input, wherein the regulator outputs a controlled voltage direct current inverter power feed. Included is an inverter in electrical communication with the regulator and receives the controlled voltage direct current inverter power feed, the inverter outputs an alternating current motor power feed to a permanent magnet brushless direct current motor that outputs a shaft rotational speed and a back electromotive force. Also, a control is provided for regulating the controlled voltage direct current inverter power feed based upon criteria utilizing the back electromotive force or an auxiliary motor stator wire loop signal in conjunction with an optional voltage look-up table to substantially make the controlled voltage result in a reduction of a pulse width modulation switching frequency to further smooth and reduce harmonic of the alternating current waveform to increase motor efficiency.

Methods And Apparatus For Providing Protection To Batteries In An Uninterruptible Power Supply

View page
US Patent:
59947942, Nov 30, 1999
Filed:
May 9, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/853751
Inventors:
David J. Wehrlen - Austin TX
Assignee:
Active Power, Inc. - Austin TX
International Classification:
H02J 908
US Classification:
307 66
Abstract:
An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) provides improved reliability by extending the useful life of a bank of batteries that provide backup power to the UPS in the event of an extended power outage. In the preferred embodiment, battery life is extended by switchably isolating the bank of batteries from the DC buss that is coupled to the critical load. Backup power for short duration outages, on the order of about ten seconds or less, is provided by a flywheel energy storage unit. Once the outage becomes extended, the isolation circuit is triggered to electrically connect the bank of batteries directly to the DC buss. In this manner, the bank of batteries does not experience AC ripple or the common, short duration outages that would otherwise cause the batteries to experience a discharge/recharge cycle.
