System, Method, And Program For Controlling Access To Data Services By A Subscriber Unit In A Wireless Network

View page
US Patent:
6628954, Sep 30, 2003
Filed:
Sep 7, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/656883
Inventors:
Rosemary McGowan - Richardson TX
Ian MaClean - Dallas TX
Donald Keeler - McKinney TX
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - St. Laurent
International Classification:
H04Q 720
US Classification:
455461, 455433, 455426, 455555
Abstract:
An improved method and system for accessing wireless data services that reduce messaging and enable roaming subscribers to access data services are described. A wireless communication system in accordance with the present invention includes at least a service control point and a gateway system (e. g. , a Gateway Generalized Packet Radio Service Serving Node (GGSN)) that is coupled to a data network. To obtain access to data services, a wireless subscriber unit establishes communication with a gateway system and requests data services from the gateway system. In response to the request, the gateway system queries the service control point regarding authorized data services for the subscriber unit. If the gateway system receives a negative reply from the service control point, then the gateway system denies access to the data services by the subscriber Unit. However, if the gateway system receives a positive reply from the service control point, then the gateway system enables access to the data services by the subscriber unit.

Providing A Supplementary Service In A Mobile Communications System

View page
US Patent:
6801781, Oct 5, 2004
Filed:
Oct 31, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/703182
Inventors:
Curtis M. Provost - Parker TX
Jerry L. Mizell - Plano TX
Donald B. Keeler - McKinney TX
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - St. Laurent
International Classification:
H04Q 720
US Classification:
455466, 455406, 370328
Abstract:
A mobile communications system includes a system controller that provides access control for mobile stations within the network controlled, by the system controller. In one example, the mobile communications network is a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network. The system controller provides access to a packet-based data network. In addition, the system controller enables prepaid short message service (SMS), in which mobile stations can originate or receive short messages according to the prepaid SMS. A flag kept in a home location register (HLR) stores a field to indicate if the user has subscribed to prepaid SMS. In one embodiment, the field is an access point name (APN) field according to the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) protocol.

Content-Based Billing Service For Wireless Prepaid Subscribers

View page
US Patent:
8644797, Feb 4, 2014
Filed:
Dec 26, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/027777
Inventors:
Ian MacLean - Dallas TX, US
Donald Keeler - McKinney TX, US
Richard J. Bianconi - Rowlett TX, US
Douglas J. Reeder - McKinney TX, US
Assignee:
Apple Inc. - Cupertino CA
International Classification:
H04W 4/00
G06Q 40/00
G06Q 10/00
H04W 4/24
G06Q 20/10
G06Q 10/06
US Classification:
455406, 705 40, 705 711
Abstract:
A method of allowing content-based billing to a prepaid subscriber or subscribers is disclosed. According to one embodiment of the invention, the content-based billing is achieved by forwarding volume limit threshold data normally used by the Serving GPRS support node to the Gateway GPRS support node, which according to the prior art, counted all data bits at the same rate. According to this embodiment, by forwarding the volume limit threshold data to the GGSN, a modified data count is accumulated since billable data is monitored and accumulates, whereas free data does not accumulate. This modified data count is then provided from the gateway GPRS support node to the Serving GPRS support node, which then transmits the accumulated data count to the SCP.

Method And Apparatus For Delivering And Presenting Calling Name Information In A Wireless Communications System

View page
US Patent:
60615605, May 9, 2000
Filed:
Apr 30, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/846330
Inventors:
Khosrow Tony Saboorian - Plano TX
Sonia Doshi - Dallas TX
Donald Bruce Keeler - Plano TX
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Corporation - Montreal
International Classification:
H04M 342
US Classification:
455415
Abstract:
A method and apparatus in a wireless communications system for presenting a calling party name to a mobile station within the wireless communications system. A communications signal is received from a network to initiate a call to a mobile station within the wireless communications system. Next, a determination is made as to whether the mobile station is provisioned to receive calling party names in response to receiving the communications signal. A calling party name is either identified using a database located within the wireless communications system or the calling party name is received as part of the initial call setup signal. Then, the calling party name is sent to the mobile station over the air interface in response to identifying the calling party name.
