US Patent:
8643383, Feb 4, 2014
Filed:
Jan 28, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/016111
Inventors:
Yuan Xiao - Ontario, CA
Lixiang Wei - Whitefish Bay WI, US
Doyle F. Busse - Jackson WI, US
Assignee:
Rockwell Automation Technologies, Inc. - Mayfield Heights OH
International Classification:
G01R 31/12
H01G 2/12
G05B 5/00
US Classification:
324548, 324519, 361 15, 318445
Abstract:
The present techniques include methods and systems for detecting a failure in a capacitor bank of an electrical drive system. Embodiments include using discharge resistors to discharge capacitors in the capacitor bank, forming a neutral node of the capacitor bank. In different capacitor configurations, the neutral node is measured, and the voltage is analyzed to determine whether a capacitor bank unbalance has occurred. In some embodiments, the node is a neutral-to-neutral node between the discharged side of the discharge resistors and a neutral side of the capacitor bank, or between the discharged side of the discharge resistors and a discharged side of a second set of discharge resistors. In some embodiments, the node is a neutral-to-ground node between the discharged side of the discharge resistors and a ground potential.

US Classification:
3184003, 363 53
Abstract:
AC pre-charging techniques are provided for pre-charging the DC bus on a motor drive. AC pre-charging techniques involve pre-charge circuitry including a manual switch, an automatic switch, and pre-charge control circuitry to switch the automatic switch between pre-charge and pre-charge bypass modes in response to an initialized pre-charge operation, input voltage sags, etc. In some embodiments, the pre-charge operation may be initialized by switching the manual switch closed. In some embodiments, the pre-charge operation may also be initialized by a detected voltage sag on the DC bus. The pre-charge circuitry may also be configured to disconnect a motor drive from the AC power supply under certain fault conditions.

Stator Resistance Detector For Use In Electric Motor Controllers

View page
US Patent:
55023606, Mar 26, 1996
Filed:
Mar 10, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/401522
Inventors:
Russel J. Kerkman - Milwaukee WI
Brian J. Seibel - Grafton WI
Doyle Busse - Muskego WI
Assignee:
Allen-Bradley Company, Inc. - Milwaukee WI
International Classification:
H02P 700
H02P 540
US Classification:
318805
Abstract:
A non-invasive system for accurately determining the stator resistance in an electric motor during motor operation. The system includes a mechanism for determining the phase angle of the stator current within the dq frame of reference and a mechanism for transforming feedback voltages into a new frame of reference defined by this phase angle. Counter EMFs are detected which are free of stator resistance and used to force the counter EMF components of the stator winding voltages to conform to desired values. The stator resistance is then derived using simple mathematical relationships between the resistance, stator current, feedback voltage and known counter EMF values.

US Patent:
20160172992, Jun 16, 2016
Filed:
Dec 16, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/571436
Inventors:
- Mayfield Heights OH, US
Doyle F. Busse - Jackson WI, US
Alia Rebecca Strandt - Hales Corners WI, US
Assignee:
Rockwell Automation Technologies, Inc. - Mayfield Heights OH
International Classification:
H02M 5/458
Abstract:
Power converters are presented having a precharging resistance and a normally closed precharging switch with a controller to limit inrush current during precharging of a DC bus circuit capacitance while preventing operation of rectifier switching devices until the DC bus voltage reaches a threshold value, and then to open the precharging switch and allow selective operation of the rectifier switching devices, with a second capacitance coupled across a rectifier output to mitigate rectifier output voltage spikes due to common mode currents flowing through a DC link choke, and additional capacitors coupled between positive and negative rectifier output terminals and ground to limit the rectifier output terminal voltages with respect to ground.
