Abstract:
An apparatus for bursting pipe is preferably adapted to receive rotational energy from the inner member of a dual-member drill string. In a preferred embodiment, an oscillating pipe-bursting member, driven by the interconnected inner members, cuts or bursts a subterranean pipe. In another preferred embodiment, a screw drive moves a pipe-bursting member between an expanded position and a retracted position. In another preferred embodiment, the pipe-bursting member is an arm moveable in response to operation of a screw drive. In yet another preferred embodiment, the pipe-bursting member is hydraulically actuated. This invention increases the efficiency of pipe-bursting operations by utilizing rotation energy generated by a horizontal directional boring system.

Abstract:
A horizontal directional drilling system is used to drive operation of a guidable reamer assembly connected to a drill string. The guidable reamer assembly preferably has a cutting member with a central longitudinal axis and a support member also having a central longitudinal axis. The longitudinal axes of the cutting member and the support member are collinear when the reamer assembly is in the non-steering position and laterally displaced when in the steering position. The assembly and method of this invention provide for increased control of reaming operations and product pipe placement.

Coupling For Dual Member Pipe

US Patent:
7216724, May 15, 2007
Filed:
Jun 28, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/878482
Inventors:
Kelvin P. Self - Stillwater OK, US
Floyd R. Gunsaulis - Perry OK, US
David R. Payne - Perry OK, US
Assignee:
The Charles Machine Works, Inc. - Perry OK
International Classification:
E21B 4/06
US Classification:
175 19, 175 73, 175320
Abstract:
A coupling assembly to interconnect an inner member and an outer member of a dual member drill string in torque transmitting engagement is disclosed. The coupling assembly is adapted to transmit torque input from both members to a downhole tool. In one embodiment, the coupling assembly comprises a connector sub that fixedly and non-fixedly couples both members. In another embodiment, the coupling assembly comprises a clutch mechanism to interconnect both members when the rotational speed of the outer member exceeds the rotational speed of the inner member. In another embodiment, the coupling assembly comprises a mechanism to couple both members by axial downhole movement of the inner member relative to the outer member. In another embodiment, the coupling assembly comprises a planetary gear system that interconnects both members to provide high torque to the downhole tool at relatively low output speed of the dual member drill string.

Configurable Beacon And Method

View page
US Patent:
7331409, Feb 19, 2008
Filed:
Feb 24, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/503327
Inventors:
Scott B. Cole - Edmond OK, US
Michael R. Campbell - Perry OK, US
Floyd R. Gunsaulis - Perry OK, US
Assignee:
The Charles Machine Works, Inc. - Perry OK
International Classification:
E21B 47/24
US Classification:
175 45, 1662552
Abstract:
A monitoring system is used to monitor the location and orientation of a downhole tool assembly by detecting an output signal. The downhole tool assembly has a beacon assembly with one or more configurable operation parameters. A transmitting assembly transmits an operation instruction signal to the beacon assembly to configure the operation parameters. The detected operation instruction signal is processed by the beacon assembly and the operation parameter is configured. The transmitting assembly may be separate from the monitoring system and have an input assembly. The input assembly allows the operator to input predetermined operation parameters into the transmitting assembly that are then transmitted to the beacon assembly. In a preferred embodiment, the configurable operation parameters may include the intensity and/or frequency of the output signal, the calibration and resolution of orientation sensors, and the rate at which data is transmitted from the beacon assembly.
