Detection Of Clad Disbond

View page
US Patent:
45677646, Feb 4, 1986
Filed:
Dec 27, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/565509
Inventors:
Thomas D. Jamison - Fort Oglethorpe GA
Frank T. Radcliff - Chattanooga TN
Assignee:
Combustion Engineering, Inc. - Windsor CT
International Classification:
G01N 2904
US Classification:
73588
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for detecting disbond in laminar workpieces. Energy is transmitted to a workpiece (8) by repetitive impacts. A transducer (12) converts energy emitted from the workpiece (8) to an electrical signal. The energy emitted in response to each of the repetitive impacts is analyzed. After filtering out the DC component (20) and amplifying the signal (30) the maximum amplitude of the energy from each impact is selected (50) and passed to a sample and hold circuit (60). The piecewise linear output of the sample and hold circuit (60) is passed through a low pass active filter (70) prior to recording on a strip chart recorder. The strip chart record is analyzed to ascertain areas of the workpiece (8) having defective clad bonding (7).

Remote Orientation Of A Probe In A Tubular Conduit

View page
US Patent:
39941736, Nov 30, 1976
Filed:
Nov 12, 1973
Appl. No.:
5/415021
Inventors:
Charles Theodore Ward - Chattanooga TN
Donald Lee Mathis - Chattanooga TN
Frank Taylor Radcliff - Chattanooga TN
Assignee:
Combustion Engineering, Inc. - Windsor CT
International Classification:
G01n 2300
US Classification:
73432R
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for orienting a probe or the like in a predetermined angular orientation within a long, curved conduit at selected longitudinal positions therewithin. A steam generator tube may comprise all or part of the curved conduit. Curved extension members may be added to an end or ends of the tube to form curved lengths of conduit including the tube.

Reel Assembly For Flexible Tubing And The Like

View page
US Patent:
43607152, Nov 23, 1982
Filed:
Jan 25, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/115506
Inventors:
Thomas D. Jamison - Fort Oglethorpe GA
Frank T. Radcliff - Chattanooga TN
Assignee:
Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
H02G 1100
US Classification:
191 122R
Abstract:
A reel assembly for flexible tubing includes a drum having a conically shaped outer wall. The maximum diameter of the drum is less than the natural cast diameter of the tubing whereby the tubing coils in pressure contact with the inner surface of the outer wall. The friction of the tubing coils against the drum wall provides drive of the reel. Electrical interconnection to the tubing is provided by a cable extending in the central bearing mount and coiled loosely about the central bearing mount thereby allowing for expansion or contraction as the reel rotates.

Drive Assembly For Probe Carrier

View page
US Patent:
42625394, Apr 21, 1981
Filed:
Jul 16, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/058008
Inventors:
Thomas D. Jamison - Fort Oglethorpe GA
Frank T. Radcliff - Chattanooga TN
Assignee:
Electric Power Research Institute - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
G01N 2904
US Classification:
73622
Abstract:
A drive assembly for a probe carrier such as used for inspection and maintenance of a heat exchanger in a steam driven electric power generation plant includes a motor and speed reducer and drive wheel for pushing a probe carrier through the tubes of the heat exchanger. The carrier may comprise nylon tubing, and the drive wheel includes radially mounted wires with the tips of the wires defining a surface for engaging the tubing. An adjustable pressure plate yieldably biases the tubing into engagement with the drive wheel with sufficient pressure for the wire tips to indent the tubing surface but without penetrating the tubing surface whereby an interference drive of the probe carrier is achieved.

Dual Isotope Method To Radiograph Structures In Nuclear Steam Supply Systems

View page
US Patent:
45670129, Jan 28, 1986
Filed:
Jul 12, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/397296
Inventors:
Frank T. Radcliff - Chattanooga TN
Assignee:
Combustion Engineering, Inc. - Windsor CT
International Classification:
G21C 1700
US Classification:
376245
Abstract:
Two parallel heat exchange tubes having that part of a support structure between them to be interrogated for defects. A pair of radiation sources are positioned in the one tube to straddle the interrogated support portion, and a radiographic film is positioned in the tube behind the interrogated portion.
