Special Effect Pigments

View page
US Patent:
8172935, May 8, 2012
Filed:
Jul 25, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/995001
Inventors:
Daniel R. Swiler - Washington PA, US
Gary L. Nuccetelli - Scenery Hill PA, US
Sean T. Weir - Bridgeville PA, US
Assignee:
Ferro Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
C04B 14/00
US Classification:
106480
Abstract:
The present invention provides mixed metal oxide based special effect pigments that can be incorporated into optically thin binder systems to produce a “metal flake” appearance that is superior to the “metal flake” appearance presently achievable using conventional special effect pigments. Special effect pigments according to the invention comprise at least 10 wt % of mixed metal oxides that exhibit the McConnellite (CuCrO) crystal structure. Other metallic elements can be incorporated into the crystal lattice structure to alter the appearance effect of the pigments.

Pigment Additive For Improving Solar Reflectance

View page
US Patent:
8580028, Nov 12, 2013
Filed:
Feb 18, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/575630
Inventors:
Gary L. Nuccetelli - Scenery Hill PA, US
Lei Wang - Washington PA, US
Daniel R. Swiler - Hagerstown MD, US
Assignee:
Ferro Corporation - Mayfield Heights OH
International Classification:
C09C 1/24
C09C 1/34
C01G 49/06
US Classification:
106456, 106453
Abstract:
A pigment additive and resulting pigment are described that when incorporated in paints for example, significantly increases total solar reflectance. Also described are compositions utilizing the noted pigments, and related methods. The pigments are formed from iron oxide and/or chromium oxide and utilize as an additive, one or more phosphate compounds.

Structured Self-Cleaning Surfaces And Method Of Forming Same

US Patent:
20060246277, Nov 2, 2006
Filed:
Apr 27, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/115946
Inventors:
Enos Axtell - Washington PA, US
George Sakoske - Washington PA, US
Daniel Swiler - Washington PA, US
Michael Hensel - Pittsburgh PA, US
Martin Baumann - Frankfurt, DE
David Matalka - Heidelberg PA, US
Gary Nuccetelli - Scenery Hill PA, US
Assignee:
Ferro Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
B32B 17/06
B05D 3/02
US Classification:
428331000, 428428000, 427372200, 427162000, 427299000, 427402000
Abstract:
The present invention involves growing diatoms on a surface for the purpose of forming nanoscale-sized siliceous structures on the surface. In accordance with the invention, diatom films are grown on various substrates, which are then fired to remove all organic material from the diatoms and produce a surface coated with intricate, nanoscale-sized structures. The nanoscale-sized structured surface is subsequently treated with a hydrophobic film-forming agent to form a structured self-cleaning surface.

Corundum Crystal Structure Pigments With Reduced Soluble Chromium Content

US Patent:
20100064942, Mar 18, 2010
Filed:
Sep 15, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/210453
Inventors:
Terry J. Detrie - Washington PA, US
Raymond E. Barnes - Wadsworth OH, US
Jacqueline C. Livingston - Washington OH, US
Gary L. Nuccetelli - Scenery Hill PA, US
Richard A. Pipoly - Garfield Heights OH, US
Daniel R. Swiler - Washington PA, US
Lei Wang - Washington PA, US
Assignee:
FERRO CORPORATION - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
C09C 3/06
US Classification:
106453
Abstract:
The potential for release of soluble chromium (VI) ions in the production or processing of certain pigments is reduced by use of certain additives. The additives include aluminum metaphosphate, aluminum fluoride, tungsten oxide, tungstic acid, and mono-ammonium phosphate. The pigments are those which contain chromium and have a corundum crystal structure.
