Kenneth J. Palmer - Wadsworth OH
Dennis R. Brandyberry - Canton OH
Grover W. Rye - Cuyahoga Falls OH
Assignee:
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company - Akron OH
International Classification:
D02G 348
US Classification:
57237
Abstract:
A metallic cable for reinforcing elastomeric articles comprises two strands of two filaments twisted together and having a cable lay length. The filaments of each strand are twisted together and the strands have strand lay lengths that are equal to one another but different from the cable lay length. The direction of twist of the strands may be either the same as, or opposite to the direction of twist of the cable.

Vapor Treatment Of Metal Tire Cord

US Patent:
43009573, Nov 17, 1981
Filed:
Dec 13, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/103242
Inventors:
Karol Marencak - Bissen, LU
Grover W. Rye - Cuyahoga Falls OH
Assignee:
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company - Akron OH
International Classification:
C23F 700
US Classification:
148 631
Abstract:
Brass coated steel tire cord is treated with vaporized benzotriazole and/or other treatment agents to promote corrosion resistance and cord to rubber adhesion retention.

Tire Construction Combining The Toeguard And Inner Liner

View page
US Patent:
52656608, Nov 30, 1993
Filed:
Jul 11, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/728409
Inventors:
Grover W. Rye - Cuyahoga Falls OH
Joseph E. Lipovac - Copley OH
Assignee:
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company - Akron OH
International Classification:
B60L 1506
US Classification:
152510
Abstract:
A new tire construction and method which makes the toe guard integral with the inner liner is provided. A tire is made using an inner liner that has a width substantially equal to the width of a prior art inner liner plus the width of prior art toe guards minus any overlap. The edges of the inner liner, which wrap around the bead, are reinforced so that the edges of the inner liner protect the bead area of the tire against damage caused by the rim or the mounting and dismounting procedure.

Tire And Rim

View page
US Patent:
51511410, Sep 29, 1992
Filed:
Mar 28, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/676496
Inventors:
Chester E. Lunieski - Kent OH
Grover W. Rye - Cuyahoga Falls OH
Assignee:
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company - Akron OH
International Classification:
B60C 15024
B60C 1300
US Classification:
152544
Abstract:
An open-torus radial ply pneumatic tire is configured for mounting on a specially designed rim. The special rim includes means for restraining the radially outward movement of the tire's rim securing regions, which are spaced apart regions of the rim in which the tire's radial carcass plies are anchored. In the rim securing regions, the carcass plies are turned axially outwardly and encased in a molded elastomeric material having a shape complementary with that of the restraining means of the special rim. The tire also includes a belt structure positioned radially outwardly of the carcass plies.

Method Of Maintaining Tire Cords In Parallel Array For Calendering With Elastomeric Material

View page
US Patent:
41244257, Nov 7, 1978
Filed:
May 31, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/801665
Inventors:
Grover W. Rye - Cuyahoga Falls OH
Richard L. Bell - North Canton OH
Assignee:
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company - Akron OH
International Classification:
B29H 904
US Classification:
156168
Abstract:
A method, other than weaving, for maintaining cords in parallel array for further processing as by calendering with elastomeric material, such as natural or synthetic rubber, to form strips or sheets of rubberized cords used in building tires, belts, and other rubber products requiring reinforcement cords. The cords are first placed in parallel array and then contacted with a piece of backing material faced with an adhesive for holding the cords parallel on the material. The backing material and attached cords are then removed to a calender where the cords are embedded in the elastomeric material.

Tire With Supporting And Cushioning Walls

View page
US Patent:
42352703, Nov 25, 1980
Filed:
Jun 30, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/920666
Inventors:
Joel M. Kahaner - Akron OH
Grover W. Rye - Cuyahoga Falls OH
Assignee:
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company - Akron OH
International Classification:
B60B 900
US Classification:
152 7
Abstract:
A tire having an annular body of resilient elastomeric material with an outer member at the outer periphery which may carry a tread and an inner member at the inner periphery for mounting on a wheel rim. The inner member is supported and cushioned by a plurality of circumferentially spaced-apart wall members extending from the inner member to the outer member. The annular body may have one or more supporting rings and the wall members of adjacent rings as well as the wall members of the same ring may be offset circumferentially of the tire. The wall members provide a lateral spring rate and a variable radial spring rate across the tread of the tire. The wall members, tread, inner member and outer member may be reinforced by cords extending at bias angles or generally circumferentially of the tire. Sidewalls between the inner and outer members may also be provided for low pressure inflation and exclusion of foreign matter from the spaces between the wall members.

Metallic Cable And Apparatus For Manufacturing The Same

View page
US Patent:
45662614, Jan 28, 1986
Filed:
Sep 14, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/650483
Inventors:
Dennis R. Brandyberry - Canton OH
Grover W. Rye - Cuyahoga Falls OH
Assignee:
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company - Akron OH
International Classification:
D02G 348
D07B 100
D07B 300
US Classification:
57212
Abstract:
A metallic cable (10) suitable for reinforcing elastomeric articles comprises two or more substantially identical, helically disposed filaments (11, 12, 13) nested together and twisted together, such that the cable has a lay length (L) that is at least two times greater than the pitch length (P) of the filaments. The cable is manufactured by drawing metallic filaments from a bobbin means (31, 32, 33) and then guiding them through a means for deforming (34) that shapes the filaments into helixes. The filaments are positioned beside and against each other such that each filament is in contact with at least one other filament. After a sunken rotating pulley (37) guides the filaments through the hollow bearing (23) of a first flyer (21), first and second rotating flyers (21, 22) twist the helically disposed filaments together to form a cable.
