Drill Bit Extension For Sidewall Corer

View page
US Patent:
43960740, Aug 2, 1983
Filed:
Nov 16, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/321655
Inventors:
Alfred H. Jageler - Tulsa OK
Lauren G. Kilmer - Tulsa OK
Houston B. Mount - Tulsa OK
George W. Terral - Tulsa OK
Assignee:
Standard Oil Company (Indiana) - Chicago IL
International Classification:
E21B 2502
E21B 4906
US Classification:
175 78
Abstract:
This invention relates to an apparatus for cutting cores from the sidewall of a borehole after the borehole has been drilled. The apparatus includes an elongated housing which supports guide means which provides a path along which a core bit and motor can be moved to extend and retract the core bit. The guide means has a rotational control section and a transverse control section. The rotation control section guides the motor and its core bit from an upright position in the housing to a selected angle and the vertical transverse control section guides the coring bit means in the direction of the formation.

Method And Apparatus For Determining Cement Conditions

View page
US Patent:
48005371, Jan 24, 1989
Filed:
Aug 1, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/893055
Inventors:
Houston B. Mount - Tulsa OK
Assignee:
Amoco Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
G01V 140
US Classification:
367 35
Abstract:
An apparatus and method of use thereof are disclosed herein for determining cement conditions adjacent a casing set within a wellbore. At least one acoustic transmitting and receiving transducer and at least one acoustic receiving transducer are positioned into contact with the interior surface of the casing. At least one pulse of acoustic energy is transmitted into the media surrounding the wellbore from the at least one acoustic transmitting and receiving transducer. Electrical signals are generated in response to acoustic energy received by both transducers from the surrounding media. Representations of the generated electrical signals are recorded as a function of the depth within the wellbore and are indicative of the cement conditions, including the casing-cement bond, the cement-formation bond, cement thickness, and the acoustic velocity associated with the cement.

Method And Apparatus For Measuring Free Hydrocarbons And Hydrocarbons Potential From Whole Core

View page
US Patent:
52012190, Apr 13, 1993
Filed:
Jun 29, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/546330
Inventors:
Eric L. Bandurski - Tulsa OK
John W. Kearns - Tulsa OK
Houston B. Mount - Tulsa OK
Assignee:
Amoco Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
G01N 122
E21B 4902
US Classification:
73153
Abstract:
A heating probe and collection assembly is provided for evaluating free hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon potential of whole core. In one embodiment, the one or more assemblies are used with a core transport system to provide measures of hydrocarbon potential as a function of depth.

Data Entry Method And Apparatus

View page
US Patent:
49739603, Nov 27, 1990
Filed:
Feb 24, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/315883
Inventors:
Houston B. Mount - Tulsa OK
Assignee:
Amoco Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
G06F 302
US Classification:
341 23
Abstract:
A housing includes a liquid crystal display, a keypad and a three ring notebook a plurality of pages therein. Each page includes a plurality of descriptors. A touch sensitive linear potentiometer is affixed to the housing adjacent a page bay into which the book pages can be received one at a time. Data concerning an observed characteristic of a geological core sample is entered into a computer memory by selecting a page and thereafter depressing the strip adjacent the descriptor of interest.

Method And Apparatus For Generating A Video Display From Signals Produced By Borehole Scanning

View page
US Patent:
47745738, Sep 27, 1988
Filed:
Apr 10, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/037294
Inventors:
Houston B. Mount - Tulsa OK
Steven A. Morris - Sand Springs OK
Assignee:
Amoco Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
H04N 531
US Classification:
358112
Abstract:
Apparatus for creating a video display from information generated by acoustically scanning a reflecting boundary circumferential of a borehole. A downhole tool generates a first signal each time a rotating transducer therein passes through magnetic north. Acoustic pulses emitted from the transducer are radially transmitted toward a borehole reflecting boundary. At least a portion of each pulse is reflected back to the transducer where the same is detected and converted to an electrical pulse representative of the reflected acoustic pulse. The peak of each electrical pulse is detected and the value digitized. A series of different addresses is associated with each digital value from a single 360. degree. borehole scan and the same are accumulated in a RAM with each digital value being stored therein at its associated address. A central processing unit selects a block of video memory locations in a video memory responsive to the magnetic north signal.

Telemetry Scheme With Slope Modulated Signal

View page
US Patent:
46495509, Mar 10, 1987
Filed:
Dec 22, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/452254
Inventors:
Houston B. Mount - Tulsa OK
Assignee:
Amoco Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
H04L 2700
US Classification:
375 37
Abstract:
A system for transmitting information contained in the form of bits. An encoded signal of two levels of magnitude is generated so that for each data word in the signal, the duration of the encoded signal at one level is equal to the duration of the encoded signal at the second level. The encoded signal is then used to generate a slope signal. It is this slope signal which is transmitted.

Automated Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Analysis

View page
US Patent:
48855405, Dec 5, 1989
Filed:
Oct 31, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/264927
Inventors:
Michael L. Snoddy - Tulsa OK
Houston B. Mount - Tulsa OK
Assignee:
Amoco Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
G01R 3320
US Classification:
324318
Abstract:
Porosity logs of continuous core are generated using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Core containing naturally-occurring fluids is conveyed between poles of a magnet for NMR analysis. The NMR measures porosity and preferably oil and water saturation and even porosity distribution in the reservoir rock at intervals along the core. The core conveyor, the NMR, and data collection and display are controlled by a processor.

Method Of Exploration For Hydrocarbons

View page
US Patent:
50126741, May 7, 1991
Filed:
Oct 31, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/265073
Inventors:
Keith K. Millheim - Tulsa OK
Houston B. Mount - Tulsa OK
Chandra S. Rai - Tulsa OK
Carl H. Sondergeld - Broken Arrow OK
Assignee:
Amoco Corporation - Chicago IL
International Classification:
E21B 4902
US Classification:
73153
Abstract:
A method of exploring for hydrocarbons is disclosed wherein core is obtained over substantially the entire length of a well and substantially all lithologies represented within the core are analyzed at a core analysis facility located adjacent the well. A measurement of a plurality of physical properties of the core are made promptly after the core is removed from the well. Thereafter, from the measurement of these physical properties, a depth correlated record is generated, and is used (a) to adjust the drilling plan for that well while it is being drilled, (b) used as inputs into other exploration processes, such as seismic surveys, magnetic surveys and gravity surveys, or (c) used for correlation with other depth correlated records obtained from other wells.
