Dispersants And Dispersant Viscosity Index Improvers From Selectively Hydrogenated Polymers: Blends With Lower Molecular Weight Components

View page
US Patent:
62150332, Apr 10, 2001
Filed:
Dec 11, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/209901
Inventors:
Thomas S. Coolbaugh - Yardley PA
John M. Klosek - Sewaren NJ
Frederick C. Loveless - Middlebury CT
John E. Marlin - Bridgewater NJ
Demetreos N. Matthews - Edison NJ
Assignee:
Mobil Oil Corporation - NY
International Classification:
C10M15700
C10M15704
US Classification:
585 12
Abstract:
The invention provides dispersants and dispersant viscosity index improvers which include polymers of conjugated dienes which have been hydrogenated, functionalized, optionally modified, and post treated. The dispersant substances include a copolymer of two different conjugated dienes. The polymers are selectively hydrogenated to produce polymers which have highly controlled amounts of unsaturation, permitting highly selective functionalization. The polymers may be blended with lower molecular weight components. Also provided are lubricant fluids, such as mineral and synthetic oils, which have been modified in their dispersancy and/or viscometric properties by means of the dispersant substances of the invention. Also provided are methods of modifying the dispersancy and/or viscometric properties of lubricating fluids such as mineral and synthetic lubricating oils. The dispersant substances may also include a carrier fluid to provide dispersant concentrates.

Selective Oxidation Of Ethyl Toluene Or Methyl Styrene Isomer Mixtures To Enrich Meta-Isomer Content

View page
US Patent:
43742971, Feb 15, 1983
Filed:
Dec 30, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/336102
Inventors:
John M. Klosek - Sewaren NJ
Margaret M. Wu - Belle Mead NJ
Assignee:
Mobil Oil Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
C07C 700
US Classification:
585868
Abstract:
The meta isomer content of ethyl toluene or methyl styrene isomer mixtures containing predominately meta isomer and para isomer is increased by subjecting the mixture to oxidation with an oxygen containing gas, e. g. air in the presence of a zeolite modified with a transition metal oxidation catalyst, e. g. Co or Cu ZSM-5. The para isomer is selectively oxidized and the meta isomer is easily separated from the product to give isomer mixtures containing greater than 90 percent meta from mixtures containing 60-65 percent meta and not separable by conventional means.

Selective Hydrogenation Of Vinyltoluene

View page
US Patent:
43790275, Apr 5, 1983
Filed:
Dec 24, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/334346
Inventors:
John M. Klosek - Sewaren NJ
Margaret M. Wu - Belle Mead NJ
Assignee:
Mobil Oil Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
B01D 314
C07C 510
C07C 704
C07C 7163
US Classification:
203 32
Abstract:
This invention provides a process for obtaining m-methylstyrene from a mixture with p-methylstyrene that comprises hydrogenating a mixture of p-methylstyrene and m-methylstyrene in the presence of a zeolite having a Constraint Index of about 1 to about 12, a silica to alumina mole ratio of at least about 12, and a dried crystal density of not less than about 1. 6 grams per cubic centimeter, modified with at least one element of Group IA, IIA, IVB, or VB of the Periodic Chart of the Elements and a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Chart of the Elements; thereby obtaining a mixture of m-methylstyrene and p-ethyltoluene, and removing p-ethyltoluene by distillation.

Process For Preparation Of Para-Divinylbenzene

View page
US Patent:
49820303, Jan 1, 1991
Filed:
Jul 3, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/376918
Inventors:
Warren W. Kaeding - Lawrenceville NJ
John M. Klosek - Sewaren NJ
Philip J. Yannich - Lake Hill NY
Lewis B. Young - Skillman NJ
Assignee:
Mobil Oil Corporation - Fairfax VA
International Classification:
C07C 228
C07C 714
US Classification:
585323
Abstract:
There is provided a method for preparing para-divinylbenzene by dehydrogenating para-diethylbenzene followed by crystallizing para-divinylbenzene. The para-diethylbenzene may be prepared by alkylating ethylbenzene with ethylene in the presence of a para-selective molecular sieve catalyst, such as ZSM-5 modified with an oxide of magnesium and, optionally, an oxide of phosphorus.
