Network Apparatus With Removable Electronic Module

View page
US Patent:
60981318, Aug 1, 2000
Filed:
May 4, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/072410
Inventors:
Dave Unger - Windham NH
David J. Berman - Swampscott MA
Christopher Grobicki - Andover MA
Lance J. McNally - Townsend MA
Mark Shufelt - Salem NH
John Ulm - Pepperell MA
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - Montreal
International Classification:
G06F 1314
US Classification:
710101
Abstract:
A network apparatus having a chassis with an external network data port and a removable electronic module coupled to the network data port through an internal data port when the removable electronic module is present in the chassis. The chassis may also provide power, radio frequency (RF), data bus, and other types of electrical and data connections to the electronic module through the use of additional internal ports. The apparatus may additionally be connected to others via a data bus, and be included as part of a rack-mounted system. The electronic module may be inserted and removed from the chassis while electrical power is applied to the chassis.

Resilient Data Communications System

View page
US Patent:
48797162, Nov 7, 1989
Filed:
Dec 23, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/137315
Inventors:
Lance McNally - Townsend MA
Anthony J. Booth - Boxboro MA
Peter S. Morley - Pepperell MA
Assignee:
BULL HN Information Systems Inc. - Billerica MA
International Classification:
G06F 1116
US Classification:
371 82
Abstract:
A communication data system is designed for resiliency by automatically replacing or bypassing defective units. The system includes a number of input/output terminals which are connected to MODEMs through a relay bank. The MODEMs send serial data to a serial I/O module which converts the serial data to bytes which it places on a VMEbus. A network processor sends the data from the VMEbus to a general purpose computer which places the data into the communications network. A general purpose computer or a back-up general purpose computer may detect a defective communication link and automatically switch to a back-up network computer, or cause a control module to switch the relay module to a spare MODEM and spare SIO. The control module may also generate a remote line test to the link between the MODEM and the terminal to determine if that link is defective.

Symmetric Multiprocessing System With Unified Environment And Distributed System Functions

Thomas L. Murray - Hollis NH
Chester M. Nibby - Beverly MA
Michelle A. Pence - Chelmsford MA
Marc Sanfacon - North Chelmsford MA
Jeffrey S. Somers - Lowell MA
G. Lewis Steiner - Milford MA
Assignee:
NEC Corporation - Tokyo
International Classification:
G06F 926
US Classification:
713600
Abstract:
The invention is directed to a memory controller for use with memory having varying timing characteristics. In particular, the timing characteristics of the various memory devices are determined and used to generate timing signals commensurate with each particular memory device.

Symmetric Multiprocessing System With Unified Environment And Distributed System Functions

US Patent:
59565225, Sep 21, 1999
Filed:
Mar 16, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/405510
Inventors:
James F. Bertone - Quincy MA
Bruno DiPlacido - Dedham MA
Thomas F Joyce - Westford MA
Martin Massucci - Burlington MA
Lance T. McNally - Townsend MA
Thomas L. Murray - Hollis NH
Chester M. Nibby - Beverly MA
Michelle A. Pence - Chelmsford MA
Marc Sanfacon - North Chelmsford MA
Jeffrey S. Somers - Lowell MA
G. Lewis Steiner - Milford MA
Assignee:
Packard Bell NEC - Sacramento CA
International Classification:
G06F 1300
US Classification:
395872
Abstract:
A symmetric multiprocessing system with a unified environment and distributed system functions provides unified address space for all functional units in the system while distributing the execution of various system functions over the functional units of the system whereby each functional unit assumes responsibility for its own aspects of these operations. In addition, the system provides improved system bus operation for transfer of data from memory.

Adaptively Generating Timing Signals For Access To Various Memory Devices Based On Stored Profiles

View page
US Patent:
58093400, Sep 15, 1998
Filed:
Aug 12, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/909745
Inventors:
James F. Bertone - Quincy MA
Bruno DiPlacido - Dedham MA
Thomas F. Joyce - Westford MA
Martin Massucci - Burlington MA
Lance J. McNally - Townsend MA
Thomas L. Murray - Hollis NH
Chester M. Nibby - Beverly MA

Jeffrey S. Somers - Lowell MA
G. Lewis Steiner - Milford MA
William S. Wu - Cupertino CA
Norman J. Rasmussen - Hillsboro OR
Suresh K. Marisetty - San Jose CA
Puthiya K. Nizar - El Darado Hills CA
Assignee:
Packard Bell NEC - Sacramento CA
International Classification:
G06F 1316
US Classification:
395878
Abstract:
Timing calculator means in a computer system are used to adaptively generate an appropriate access signal, to one of a plurality of memory types, based on first and second timing control values, wherein the first timing control value represents information specific to and limited to the start of a memory operation and wherein the second timing control value represents information representing other timing events. That is, the state machine of the present invention requires a distinct starting control value, separate from other timing values, for calculation of appropriate memory access parameters.

Modem Backplane Interconnections

View page
US Patent:
48316342, May 16, 1989
Filed:
Jul 15, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/219941
Inventors:
Lance McNally - Townsend MA
Peter Morley - Pepperell MA
Assignee:
Bull HN Information Systems Inc. - Billerica MA
Bull HN Information Systems Australia PTY Limited - Billerica MA
International Classification:
H05K 710
US Classification:
375 8
Abstract:
Data communication equipment, including relay modules and MODEMS, are mounted on etched back planes. Etched conductors transfer communication line signal pairs to the relay modules, from the relay modules to the MODEMS and from the MODEMS to an output connector. Ribbon cables plugged into the output connectors transfer the MODEM output signals to logic boards, which are plugged into an etched VME bus panel. CPU's plugged into the etched VME bush panel receive signals from and transfer signals to the etched VME bus.

Hot Extraction And Insertion Of Logic Boards In An On-Line Communication System

US Patent:
49997874, Mar 12, 1991
Filed:
Jul 15, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/219958
Inventors:
Lance McNally - Townsend MA
Peter Morley - Pepperell MA
James W. Lotti - Marlboro MA
Assignee:
Bull HN Information Systems Inc. - Billerica MA
International Classification:
G06K 1500
US Classification:
364514
Abstract:
A real-time, high uptime transaction processing system includes many user terminals communicating with service providers via a communications network. A defective logic board is replaced or a board providing system expansion is installed without powering down the system by providing external auxiliary voltages and a reset signal to the board to put it in a passive state while it is being plugged into or unplugged from its backplane connector. Also under computer control the system is made inactive for a short period of time.
