Turbine Singlet Nozzle Assembly With Radial Stop And Narrow Groove

View page
US Patent:
8118550, Feb 21, 2012
Filed:
Mar 11, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/402066
Inventors:
Steven Sebastian Burdgick - Schenectady NY, US
Andrew Paul Greif - Geneva IL, US
Lyle B. Spiegel - Niskayuna NY, US
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
F01D 1/02
US Classification:
4152081
Abstract:
A nozzle assembly for a turbine including an airfoil, inner and outer sidewalls, and inner and outer rings is provided. The sidewalls and rings are coupled together using a weld and mechanical interconnection, including axial and radial mechanical stops to allow for an accurate assembly, to ensure correct radial and axial positions of the parts during welding, to minimize weld shrinkage and to control an axial weld length. The configuration may further include one or more surfaces at an interface between a ring and a sidewall angled away from the interface to form a narrow groove. The configuration further may include a ring with a consumable root portion to facilitate the weld, and to provide a fixturing stop to further ensure that the parts remain in the correct position.

Process Of Welding Gamma Prime-Strengthened Nickel-Base Superalloys

View page
US Patent:
20030102061, Jun 5, 2003
Filed:
Dec 4, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/005009
Inventors:
Lyle Spiegel - Niskayuna NY, US
Raymond White - Schenectady NY, US
John Murphy - Niskayuna NY, US
Daniel Nowak - Alplaus NY, US
International Classification:
B23K035/24
US Classification:
148/527000, 228/262300
Abstract:
A process for welding superalloys, and particularly articles formed of gamma prime-strengthened nickel-base superalloys whose chemistries and/or microstructures differ. The process entails forming the faying surface of at least one of the articles to have a cladding layer of a filler material. The filler material may have a composition that is different from both of the articles, or the same as one of the articles. The cladding layer is machined to promote mating of the faying surfaces, after which the faying surfaces are mated and the articles welded together. After cooling, the welded assembly is free of thermally-induced cracks.

B23K 26/20
B23K 15/00
US Classification:
219121140, 219121640
Abstract:
A weld prep joint for welding a pair of axially aligned first and second machine rotor forgings includes a first weld joint configuration in an end of the first rotor forging including a first radial weld surface and a first axial rabbet surface; a second weld joint configuration on an end of the second rotor forging including a second radial weld surface adapted to engage the first radial weld surface, a second axial rabbet surface adapted to engage the first axial rabbet surface, and a third radial non-weld surface extending radially inwardly of the second rabbet surface and axially offset from the second radial weld surface.

Shimmed Laser Beam Welding Process For Joining Superalloys For Gas Turbine Applications

View page
US Patent:
20070017906, Jan 25, 2007
Filed:
Jun 30, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/169695
Inventors:
Daniel Nowak - Greenville SC, US
Ganjiang Feng - Greenville SC, US
Lyle Spiegel - Niskayuna NY, US
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
B23K 26/20
US Classification:
219121640
Abstract:
A method of laser beam welding at least two adjacent superalloy components includes (a) aligning the components along a pair of faying surfaces but without a backing plate; (b) placing a superalloy shim between the faying surfaces; (c) welding the components together using a laser beam causing portions of the superalloy components along the faying surfaces to mix with the superalloy shim; and cooling the components to yield a butt weld between the components.
