Shaft Seal Construction For Bin Level Indicators

View page
US Patent:
45807892, Apr 8, 1986
Filed:
Oct 23, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/663990
Inventors:
Richard G. Jett - Saint Charles IL
Assignee:
Ludlow Industries, Inc. - Elburn IL
International Classification:
F16J 1534
US Classification:
277 65
Abstract:
The shaft seal construction is employed in a bin level indicator between the housing and the rotatable shaft thereof. The housing has an enlarged bore therein concentric with the shaft. A composite pressure sealing ring is disposed in sealing relation between the shaft and the bore. Such ring has a rubber-like pressure sealing ring member facing forwardly and a metal backing ring member behind the rubber-like ring member and preferably bonded thereto. The rubber-like ring member has a peripheral surface in sealing engagement with the bore, and a forwardly projecting annular sealing lip in rotary sealing engagement with the shaft. The metal backing ring member has a peripheral surface compressibly engaging the bore with an interference fit therebetween. A rubber-like vacuum sealing ring is disposed behind the metal backing ring member and is provided with a first frusto-conical sealing lip, engaging the backing ring member, and a second annular sealing lip in sealing engagement with the shaft.

Level Winding Reel Mechanism For A Bin Level Indicator

View page
US Patent:
42628547, Apr 21, 1981
Filed:
Sep 14, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/075760
Inventors:
Richard G. Jett - Saint Charles IL
Assignee:
Ludlow Industries, Inc. - Elburn IL
International Classification:
B65H 7500
G01F 2300
US Classification:
242 54R
Abstract:
The level winding reel mechanism comprises a frame, a winding reel rotatably mounted on the frame, a line connected to the reel and adapted to be wound thereon, and a pulley rotatably mounted on the frame for guiding the line to the reel, the pulley having a peripheral groove therein for receiving the line, the reel having a stepped hub comprising first and second cylindrical portions having first and second different diameters with an annular shoulder between the first and second portions, the first diameter being less than the second diameter by an amount corresponding generally with the diameter of the line, the reel having first and second end flanges projecting radially from the ends of the first and second portions of the hub, the hub having anchor means therein for anchoring one end of the line, the first portion of the hub having an entry hole therein for receiving the line, the entry hole being adjacent the shoulder, the pulley having its peripheral groove in alignment with a point on the first portion of the hub spaced away from the shoulder and the center of said entry hole, the spacing between the point and the center of entry hole corresponding generally to the diameter of the line, whereby the second wrapping of the line around the hub is laid down adjacent the first wrapping, and each subsequent wrapping is laid down adjacent the preceding wrapping.

Slip Clutch For A Bin Level Indicator

View page
US Patent:
43186246, Mar 9, 1982
Filed:
Aug 25, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/180631
Inventors:
Richard G. Jett - Saint Charles IL
International Classification:
B01F 1304
B01F 1502
US Classification:
366349
Abstract:
A slip clutch for use in a bin level indicator or the like between a motor operated driving shaft and a driven shaft which rotates paddle means adapted to be impeded or stopped by the rising material in a bin or the like, comprising a hollow end portion on the driven shaft, the driving shaft being rotatably received in an axial bore in such hollow end portion, and a spring loop mounted around the hollow end portion for rotation therewith, such hollow end portion having a cutaway portion forming a recess communicating with such bore, the driving shaft having a flat surface on one side thereof, the spring loop extending into such recess and initially into engagement with such flat surface to transmit torque between the driving and driven shafts, the spring loop being flexible outwardly by the flat surface on the driving shaft to provide for slipping between the driving shaft and the driven shaft when the torque being transmitted by the slip clutch exceeds a predetermined value, the spring loop preferably being made of spring wire.
