Spinal Correction System With Multi-Stage Locking Mechanism

View page
US Patent:
20070043364, Feb 22, 2007
Filed:
Jun 19, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/455419
Inventors:
Trace Cawley - Boca Raton FL, US
John Pepper - Cheshire CT, US
Doris Blake - Delray Beach FL, US
International Classification:
A61F 2/30
US Classification:
606061000
Abstract:
In a rod fixation system of the type used to treat various spinal conditions, the same fastener is used to lock both a polyaxial screw and a rod in position. A spinal correction device according to the invention, adapted for use with a rod and a polyaxial screw having a ball-shaped head and a threaded end, comprises a head-body and a cap. The head-body includes a lower internal cavity to receive the ball-shaped head of the screw, an upper bore to receive a fixation rod therethrough, and an upper end configured to receive the cap. The head-body and the cap are configured such that a first rotation of the cap locks the polyaxial screw in position, and a second rotation of the cap locks the rod in position. In the preferred embodiment, the head-body includes one or more gaps to facilitate flexion of the head-body as a rotational torque is placed on the cap. The gap or gaps may be horizontal, vertical or other angles relative to the axis of the entrapped rod.

Micro-Flail Assembly And Method Of Use For The Preparation Of A Nucleus/Vertebral End Cap Of A Spine

View page
US Patent:
20090209989, Aug 20, 2009
Filed:
Feb 13, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/370964
Inventors:
Doris M. BLAKE - Delray Beach FL, US
John B. SLEDGE - Marblehead MA, US
Assignee:
U. S. SPINAL TECHNOLOGIES, L.L.C. - Boca Raton FL
International Classification:
A61B 17/32
US Classification:
606167
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides a micro-flail assembly and associated method of use for the preparation of a nucleus/vertebral end cap of a spine. The micro-flail assembly is utilized in the formation of a nucleus/vertebral end cap between adjacent vertebrae while simultaneously protecting an adjacent annulus with a protective sheath. The protective sheath also acts as a guide while the micro-flail assembly is pivoted to form the end cap. Advantageously, the present invention can be utilized with a variety of surgical procedures including minimally invasive surgery. The formation of the end cap can be done in preparation of providing an insert device (e.g., bone graft, cage, artificial disc, or the like).

Systems And Methods For Retaining A Plate To A Substrate With An Asynchronous Thread Form

View page
US Patent:
20090216282, Aug 27, 2009
Filed:
Mar 2, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/395766
Inventors:
Doris M. Blake - Delray Beach FL, US
Trace Cawley - Boca Raton FL, US
International Classification:
A61B 17/80
A61B 17/86
US Classification:
606286, 606305
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides systems and methods for retaining a plate, such as a cervical plate, to a substrate, such as bone, through a locking screw with upper asynchronous threads and lower cancellous threads. The present invention utilizes the locking screw with cancellous-type threads to draw the screw into the substrate. The screw is operable to retain a plate to the substrate and is configured to gall and lock to the plate through the upper threads which are out-of-phase with corresponding threads on the plate thereby preventing reverse threading or backing out of the screw.

US Patent:
20140358184, Dec 4, 2014
Filed:
Aug 18, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/462342
Inventors:
- Salt Lake City UT, US
Doris Blake - Delray Beach FL, US
Trace R. Cawley - Boca Raton FL, US
Peter Harris - Boca Raton FL, US
International Classification:
A61B 17/86
US Classification:
606304
Abstract:
Biomedical implant fastener systems, such as bone screw systems and the like. In some embodiments, a fastener may comprise a first plurality of teeth, and a washer configured to be received on the fastener may comprise a second plurality of teeth configured to be engaged with the first plurality of teeth. The first plurality of teeth may be configured to engage with the second plurality of teeth such that so as to allow for selective rotation between the washer and the fastener in a first rotational direction and so as to prevent rotation between the washer and the fastener in a second rotational direction opposite from the first rotational direction when the fastener is engaged with the washer such that second plurality of teeth is engaged with the first plurality of teeth so as to prevent the fastener from backing out of the washer after engagement.
