Spring Applied Parking Brake Assembly Having A Manual Quick Release Feature

View page
US Patent:
6378668, Apr 30, 2002
Filed:
Feb 24, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/511164
Inventors:
James M. Zemyan - Wilmerding PA
Roger V. Lewis - North Huntingdon PA
Assignee:
Westinghouse Air Brake Company - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
F16D 6524
US Classification:
188170, 188 3 R, 188 33, 188153 R
Abstract:
A spring applied parking brake assembly for a railroad vehicle braking system is provided for an automatic application of the parking brake in the absence of an air source. The spring applied parking brake assembly comprises a cylindrical casing containing a piston assembly. The piston assembly is mounted for longitudinal movement within the casing upon the application and/or removal of pneumatic pressure to the piston assembly. The piston assembly is associated with a force transfer lever of the braking system so as to apply a force to this force transfer lever upon longitudinal movement of the piston assembly. At least one spring member is provided within the cylindrical casing. This spring member applies a constant force to the piston assembly such that longitudinal movement of the piston assembly automatically occurs upon removal of pneumatic pressure to the braking system, causing the piston assembly to retract within the casing and the force transfer lever to rotate in a direction to initiate a brake application. Thus, once the train is removed from the train consist and the air supply for the pneumatic braking system has been disconnected, the brakes of the train are automatically applied. A manual quick release system is also provided which allows the parking brake to be released during shunting operations or anytime that it is desirable to move the vehicle in the absence of air.

Simplified Truck Mounted Brake System

US Patent:
6971488, Dec 6, 2005
Filed:
Nov 8, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/983908
Inventors:
Michael E. Ring - Saint John IN, US
James M. Zemyan - Wilmerding PA, US
Assignee:
Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies Corporation - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
B61H013/00
B60T011/10
US Classification:
188153R, 1882191, 188107, 188 33
Abstract:
A brake rigging comprising first and second brake beams. A brake shoe assembly including a brake shoe adjacent each end of brake beams. A first force transfer mechanism connected intermediate first and second ends thereof to the first brake beam for moving a brake shoe into engagement with confronting wheels during braking. A second force transfer mechanism connected intermediate first and second ends thereof for moving brake shoes into engagement with confronting wheels during braking. A first force transmitting device engageable with such second brake beam for rotating such second force transfer mechanism. An adjustable length second force transmitting device having one end connected to the first force transfer mechanism and another end connected to the second force transfer mechanism and an apparatus engageable with such second force transmitting device and a portion of such brake rigging for changing a length of the second force transmitting device.

Disk Brake Arranged Tmx

US Patent:
7341128, Mar 11, 2008
Filed:
Dec 9, 2004
Appl. No.:
11/008018
Inventors:
Michael E. Ring - Saint John IN, US
James M. Zemyan - Wilmerding PA, US
Michael J. Moriarity - Lansing MI, US
Assignee:
WABTEC Holding Corp. - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
B61H 13/00
F16D 51/00
US Classification:
188 33, 188 727, 188343
Abstract:
A brake rigging for a railway vehicle having a singular truck-mounted brake apparatus for generating a braking force and a plurality of disk caliper assemblies for applying the braking force to each wheel. Wedge-like elements are rigidly attached to the braking beams of the truck-mounted brake apparatus and engage a pair of rollers that are pivotably mounted on corresponding ends of a pair of pivoted levers disposed within a disk caliper assembly. The wedge-like elements transmit a generated braking force to the levers, the rocking of which in opposite directions is effective to force the brake shoes against the respective opposite sides of a disc brake rotor to exert the braking force thereon.

Hydraulic Parking Brake For A Railroad Vehicle Braking System

View page
US Patent:
62796895, Aug 28, 2001
Filed:
Jan 20, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/233896
Inventors:
James Zemyan - Wilmerding PA
Assignee:
Westinghouse Air Brake Company - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
B61H 1300
US Classification:
188 33
Abstract:
A hydraulic parking brake assembly for a railroad vehicle braking system is provided for an automatic application of the parking brake in the absence of an air source. The hydraulic parking brake assembly comprises a hydraulic actuator having a hydraulic piston and a spindle. The spindle is capable of entering a hole provided in the back surface of a pneumatic cylinder of the railroad vehicle braking system. Upon the application of hydraulic fluid within the hydraulic actuator, the hydraulic piston and spindle move in a forwardly direction, causing the spindle to contact the piston within the pneumatic cylinder and apply a force to this pneumatic piston as if pneumatic pressure were applied within the pneumatic cylinder. Such application of force to the pneumatic piston initiates a braking sequence to achieve application of the parking brake to the railroad vehicle eliminating the need to manually apply the parking brake with a hand wheel.

Manual Empty/Load Device

US Patent:
60271809, Feb 22, 2000
Filed:
Apr 28, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/301038
Inventors:
William G. Greenaway - N. Huntingdon PA
James M. Zemyan - Wilmerding PA
Roger V. Lewis - N. Huntingdon PA
Assignee:
Westinghouse Air Brake Company - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
B60T 818
US Classification:
303 222
Abstract:
A manual shifting apparatus for an automatic empty/load brake device used in conjunction with a pneumatic braking system provided on a transport vehicle having a truck and a car body mounted thereon through a resilient suspension system. The automatic empty/load brake device has a sensor arm which moves through a range of positions upon the application of a braking force to the transport vehicle by the pneumatic braking system. The range of positions includes a first range of positions indicating the transport vehicle as being in a loaded condition and a second range of positions indicating the transport vehicle as being in an unloaded condition. The automatic empty/load brake device applies a substantially reduced pneumatic braking force to the transport vehicle whenever the sensor arm is in the second range of positions. The manual shifting apparatus is adapted for mounting on the transport vehicle adjacent the automatic empty/load brake device and includes a manual shifting member movable between a first disposition and a second disposition. In the first disposition, the manual shifting member confines the sensor arm of the automatic empty/load device to the first range of positions and excludes the sensor arm from travel into the second range of positions.
